Brief History of Google vs Amazon

Over the last 18 months, there has a been an ongoing fight between Google and Amazon. The fight started between Google and Amazon because Google wanted to sell its products on Amazon.com. But, Google sells products that directly compete with Amazon. Amazon decided to block all Google products from being sold on Amazon so that Amazon could direct shoppers to the Amazon Fire TV and other Amazon Alexa enabled devices. Google responded by removing YouTube from Amazon.

But now, it looks like the fight is over! YouTube is now on Amazon Fire TV.

YouTube has even updated their list of supported devices: YouTube on Your Amazon Fire TV

Google vs Amazon – More History

In December of 2017, Amazon stopped selling Google Chromecast, Google Home, Goolge Nest, Google Pixel, and other Google products on Amazon.com.

On January 01, 2018, Google responded by ending YouTube support on the Amazon Fire TV and the Amazon Echo Show.

The YouTube App on the Amazon FireTV displayed the following message:

Starting on 1/1/2018, YouTube will not be available on this device. You can continue to enjoy your favorite creators and videos in many other ways. Please visit https://goo.gl/LefFGe for a list of devices you can use.

Google’s Official Statement:

We’ve been trying to reach agreement with Amazon to give consumers access to each other’s products and services. But Amazon doesn’t carry Google products like Chromecast and Google Home, doesn’t make Prime Video available for Google Cast users, and last month stopped selling some of Nest’s latest products. Given this lack of reciprocity, we are no longer supporting YouTube on Echo Show and FireTV. We hope we can reach an agreement to resolve these issues soon.

Amazon Official Response to Google:

Echo Show and Fire TV now display a standard web view of YouTube.com and point customers directly to YouTube’s existing website. Google is setting a disappointing precedent by selectively blocking customer access to an open website. We hope to resolve this with Google as soon as possible.
