More ESPN Layoffs After Thanksgiving
In yet another nod to the impact of Cord Cutting and a fast-changing TV entertainment industry, Sports Illustrated is reporting that there will be more ESPN layoffs after Thanksgiving.
ESPN will lay off more than 100 staffers after the Thanksgiving holidays, multiple sources tell Sports Illustrated. The layoffs, which were described by a person briefed on the plans, will hit positions across ESPN including front-facing talent on the television side, producers, executives, and digital and technology staffers. The SportsCenter franchise is expected to be hit hard—including on-air people—given the frequency of the show has lessened considerably on main network ESPN.

This is yet another round of layoffs for the sports media giant ESPN.
ESPN has over 4,000 US employees and 8,000 employees worldwide. Previous ESPN layoffs include 300 laid off in 2015 and 100 laid off in April of 2017.
ESPN has been struggling with customer losses and threats from streaming content marketed directly to consumers – Netflix, Hulu, Sling TV. ESPN is locked into long-term TV deals with both sport leagues and cable networks, which has made it difficult for ESPN to quickly shift away from cable and satellite TV, to direct to consumer streaming media platforms.
As Cord Cutting continues to grow, the landscape of home TV entertainment will certainly continue to impact ESPN viewership and subscription rates for cable and satellite TV.
