Game of Thrones Creators Sign $200 Million Deal With Netflix
Game of Thrones creators sign $200 Million deal with Netflix to create movies and TV shows exclusive to Netflix. This is another move by Netflix to go after big names and ensure they have the talent to create compelling original programming.
David Benioff and DB Weiss (Game of Thrones creators) stated…
Netflix has built something astounding and unprecedented, and we’re honored they invited us to join them.”
More Big Name Netflix Deals
Previous big name deals for Netflix include Ryan Murphy, Shonda Rhimes, and Kenya Barris.
Ryan Murphy singed a five-year $300 Million deal with Netflix in 2018. Ryan Murphy was the producer of shows like “Glee” and “American Horror Story.”
Shonda Rhimes (Shondaland) signed with Netflix to create eight new shows for $100 Million. Rhimes is known for “Grey’s Anatomy” and “How to Get Away with Murder.”

Game of Thrones Creators Sign $200 Million Deal With Netflix
Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and DB Weiss signed a $200 Million deal to create new movies and TV shows for Netflix. HBO, Amazon, and Disney all have been reported to want production deals with Benioff and Weiss. But Netflix got the deal done with $200 Million.
It is not yet known what Benioff and Weiss will create for Netflix.
But even a better question is, when will Benioff and Weiss work on new shows for Netflix?
Benioff and Weiss already have a signed commitment with Disney’s Lucasfilm company. They are writing and producing a new Star Wars trilogy for Disney. The first Star Wars movie is expected to be released in 2022. And there are two more Star Wars movies to create after the 2022 release.
Considering their commitment to the Star Wars trilogy, it is hard to see when Benioff and Weiss will be able to focus on creating new content for Netflix. We will have to wait for more details, which are sure to come.
Netflix Must Create New Content
Netflix must create new and compelling content because other streaming competitors like Disney and AT&T continue to pull their content. Disney has pulled Marvel licensing from Netflix. AT&T will pull the TV series “Friends” from Netflix in 2020. NBC will pull the TV series “The Office” by the end of 2020.
Netflix is spending a lot of money to create new original content. And Netflix spending on new content has ballooned over the years. Netflix spent $2 Billion on new original content in 2013. $3 Billion on content in 2014. $5 Billion on content in both 2015 and 2016. $9 Billion in 2017. $13 Billion in 2018. And plans to spend $15 BILLION in 2019. That is over $35 Billion spent to create new movies and TV shows in just the last three years.
In just 2018 and with $13 Billion, Netflix was able to create over 1000 new movies and TV shows. And over 1500 hours of original programming for their customers.
Netflix Spending Compared to HBO, CBS, and Amazon Video (2017)
Current Here is a breakdown of spending for new original programming in 2017.
HBO – $2.5 Billion
CBS – $4 Billion
Amazon Video – $4.5 Billion
Netflix – $9 Billion
Also, Disney and Apple reportedly spent around $1 Billion per year on original programming in 2017.
For 2019, Disney+ is planning to spend around $24 Billion for new original programming, with $16.4 Billion of that for non-sports content. However, the $24 Billion includes their content targeted for the theaters.
It is becoming a race to create new content. Who will win?
