Free TV Shows and Movies on Your Roku
Roku is rolling out “Featured Free” as a new addition to the Roku Home Screen navigation. Look for this to get added to your Roku Home Screen navigation in the next few weeks.
The “Featured Free” navigation will show Roku users FREE content from streaming apps like The Roku Channel, ABC, The CW, CW Seed, Fox, Freeform, Pluto, SonyCrackle, Tubi, and others.
Currently the Roku Home Screen has the following navigation:
- Home
- My Feed
- Movie Store
- TV Store
- Search
- Streaming Channels
- Settings
Note: Did you notice the “News” navigation is gone from your Roku Home Screen? What Happened to the News on My Roku Player?
Featured Free will start rolling out to Roku devices immediately. Look for it on your Roku Home Screen navigation soon.
How Will “Featured Free” Work?
We don’t know how “Featured Free” will work, so here are some questions and my thoughts…
Will “Featured Free” Show ALL of the Free Content Available?
Maybe?
There is a LOT of FREE TV shows and movies available on Roku players. With lots of content, you need to have an intuitive and easy navigation system that allows you to find TV shows.
Will Roku Select the “Featured Free” Content?
Almost certainly.
There is simply too much FREE content. Roku will probably choose which content will be “Featured” – or gets higher exposure due to screen and navigation placement.
Will Roku Accept Payment From TV Studios For Their Shows To Be “Featured”?
Very likely.
Roku sells hardware – Roku Players. And Roku licenses their software to TV manufacturers for Roku TVs.
But Roku is also an advertising company. They collect data and work with companies to target ads to Roku owners.
It is very likely that Roku will have partnership deals with content creators (TV studios) to promote or highlight TV series or episodes as “Featured Free” content.
Will Roku Users Be Able to Filter or Bookmark “Featured Free” Content?
Not Likely.
It is not likely you will be able to filter “Featured Free” content to only display the types of TV shows that interest you.
It is not likely you will be able to Bookmark content found in the “Featured Free” section to watch later.
