ESPN Customer Loss Grows
ESPN Customer Loss Grows
ESPN customer loss grows. Six years ago ESPN was in 100 Million homes. Today ESPN is in 88 Million homes. In 6 years ESPN has lost 12 Million customers.
Over the last year, ESPN has aggressively been cutting staff and on-air people to cut costs.
Why has ESPN lost so many customers? Many believe that Cord Cutters, Cord Shavers, and Cord Nevers are to blame.
Who are Cord Cutters – Cord Shavers – Cord Nevers
Cord Cutters: People who have stopped paying for Cable TV and Satellite TV.
Cord Shavers: People who have switched to smaller and cheaper TV packages.
Cord Nevers: People who have NEVER had Cable TV or Satellite TV.
TV’s Big Shift – An Explosion of Content
No one doubts that the TV and movie environment is rapidly shifting.
Today, companies like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Studios, and Crackle are making original TV and movie content. This has caused an explosion of content that is now available to consumers. It gives consumers choices.
Conclusion
An explosion of content has allowed consumers to have great choices other than traditional cable and satellite TV. Because of these choices, Cord Cutters are cancelling their traditional cable and satellite TV providers.
Cord Shavers are downgrading their TV to smaller and cheaper TV packages. Cord Shavers typically supplement their TV with a streaming service such as Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime Vidoe.
Cord Nevers have never paid for cable or satellite TV and probably never will. These are typically younger people who have never known life without Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and YouTube. Cord Nevers get most of their TV content from Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and YouTube.
What does the future hold for ESPN? ESPN must shift. And that is what they are trying to do.
