What is Apple TV+
In March 2019 Apple announced Apple TV+ will be coming in the fall of 2019. Apple TV+ will be a new on-demand streaming service that will have original TV shows and movies.
Apple TV+ will be an ad-free subscription service and compete with companies like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video (Amazon Studios), and the new streaming service Disney+.
Read about the Disney+ Bundle Deal.
And just like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney… Apple TV+ will have original programming. Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Jennifer Aniston, and Jason Momoa have already committed to either starring or working on original Apple TV+ exclusive content.
Apple TV+ will be available to stream using the existing Apple TV app on Apple TV streaming device. While the Apple TV app is currently only available on the Apple TV device, it is planned for the Roku and Amazon Fire TV.
Apple TV+ Will Be $9.99 Per Month
While $9.99 per month is the current rumor on how much Apple TV+ will be, let’s hope it will be much less. When you compare the cost of other streaming services and the amount of content they have, it is hard to imagine how Apple TV+ would be a good deal.
Let’s do a quick price comparison of other streaming services that have original programming…
- Netflix costs $12.99/month for High Definition and $8.99 for Standard Definition
- Hulu costs $11.99/month for High Definition with No Commercials and $5.99/month for Limited Commercials
- Amazon Prime Video costs $8.99/month for High Definition with No Commercials – Or $12.99/month for the Amazon Prime Membership which includes Amazon Prime Video
- Disney+ costs $6.99/month
- Disney+, ESPN+, Hulu Bundle Deal costs $12.99/month
- YouTube Originals (New) will be FREE after September 24, 2019
- YouTube Originals (Old) are included with your YouTube TV subscription $49.99/month or YouTube Premium subscription $11.99/month
Disney+, Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video (Amazon Studios) all create their own original and exclusive programming.
In 2018, Netflix alone spent $13 Billion to create original programming. $13 Billion paid for over 1000 new movies and TV shows for Netflix that totals to over 1500 hours of original programming.
Apple is reported to be spending $6 Billion to create their original programming for the launch of Apple TV+.
But Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney are way ahead of the game. They have been creating content for years. And they all have large libraries of original TV shows and movies to watch. They all stream their own original content and license content from other production companies. Those major production companies include Walt Disney Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures, Universal Pictures, Columbia Pictures, and Paramount Pictures.
At launch, Apple TV+ will only have their own original content for subscribers. They don’t have any license deals to stream TV shows or movies that they do not own. If Apple TV+ wants to compete with Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney, they will have to get more content for their subscribers.
Does it matter in the long run though. The major production companies are not renewing their licensing deals. We already know Walt Disney Pictures is ending license deals with Netflix. Fortunately, Netflix has been preparing for this be creating their own content.
Programming ownership is becoming very important for streaming services. Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney all create their own content. And as each year goes by, Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video increase their production budgets for original programming.
